September often sees an extension of August sunshine, coupled with lovely crisp autumnal evenings and morning mists.

The National Railway Museum’s Mystery on the Rails season finishes on the 3rd of September continues, exploring the special place of railways in detective fiction and well as exploring real-life crimes with exhibitions, workshops and talks.

Also on the 3rd is the Allied Forces Memorial Day at the Yorkshire Air Museum, a poignant gathering of veteran, current and training service personnel to commemorate the sacrifice of Allied aircrews across the history of aviation.

From the 8th to the 16th Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical comes to the Grand Opera House.

The September Sunday Family Raceday meet sees horseracing again at York Racecourse on the 10th.

On the 16th and the 17th is the York National Premier Book Fair at York Racecourse with a vast number of second hand books for sale is the UK’s largest rare, antiquarian and out-of-print book fair.

On the 21st Texas play at York Barbican Events Centre.

York's main Food and Drink Festival takes over the city from the 22nd September to the 1st Oct with markets, special events and demonstrations.

On the 23rd York Barbican Events Centre is showing the film La La Land accompanied live by a 60 piece orchestra.

The North York Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala runs from the 29th September to the 1st October with a selection of guest and steam-based locomotives running through the beautiful moorland landscape and a beer festival.

Comedian Milton Jones will be coming to York Barbican Events Centre on Saturday 30th.

York Art Gallery’s exhibition Picasso: Ceramics from the Attenborough Collection continues (until 5th November but dates to be confirmed).

The Yorkshire Museum’s ‘Viking: Rediscover the Legend’ in partnership with the British Museum continues (running until 5th November 2017). This major new exhibition with bring two of the most significant collections of Viking Age treasure in Britain together for the first time.  

The Castle Museum’s exhibition, York’s Sweet Past (running to 5th January 2018) continues.
